Abbiamo deciso di eliminare la nostra musica (compresa quella della nostra precedente incarnazione One Dying Wish) da Spotify (e da altre piattaforme analoghe).
Siamo sempre stati consapevoli della contraddizione insita nell’affidare le nostre creazioni ed il nostro messaggio ad una multinazionale, ma lo abbiamo fatto con la speranza che questo potesse permettere a quel messaggio di raggiungere più persone.
In queste settimane abbiamo appreso degli ingenti investimenti del fondatore e CEO della suddetta piattaforma in una startup impegnata nella produzione di droni militari e, semplicemente, non vogliamo essere in alcun modo coinvolti, neanche indirettamente, neanche per la minima, infinitesimale parte che può riguardare una band come la nostra, nella folle corsa al riarmo alla quale stiamo assistendo.
Se quella degli investimenti in tecnologie militari è stata la “goccia che ha fatto traboccare il vaso”, vorremmo anche sottolineare la massiccia campagna che Spotify sta portando avanti contro qualsiasi forma di “pirateria”: dal momento che la maggior parte dei guadagni delle piattaforme di streaming proviene dalla profilazione dei dati e non dagli stream in sé, si tratta di una semplice ritorsione ideologica, volta a tutelare non le/gli artist* ma il principio dell’accumulazione capitalistica. Accumulazione a cui siamo chiamat* a contribuire con il nostro stesso essere di persone che realizzano la musica e persone che la ascoltano, con le emozioni che ci suscita: ad essere mercificata e sfruttata (e condizionata) non è solo l’espressione “artistica” ma lo sono anche i desideri e, in ultima istanza, la nostra essenza, appunto.
Con la consapevolezza che non può esistere “consumo etico” nel recinto del capitalismo e che la demonizzazione delle piattaforme è un riflesso che ci impedisce di guardare alla vera natura del problema, continuerete a trovarci su Bandcamp fino a nuovo avviso. We have decided to remove our music (including that of our previous incarnation One Dying Wish) from Spotify (and other similar platforms).
We have always been aware of the contradiction inherent in entrusting our creations and our message to a multinational, but we did it with the hope that this could allow that message to reach more people.
In recent weeks we have learned of the huge investments of the founder and CEO of the aforementioned platform in a startup engaged in the production of military drones and, simply, we do not want to be involved in any way, not even indirectly, not even for the minimal, infinitesimal part that can concern a band like ours, in the crazy arms race we are witnessing.
If the investments in military technologies were the “straw that broke the camel’s back”, we would also like to highlight the massive campaign that Spotify is carrying out against any form of “piracy”: since most of the streaming platforms’ earnings come from data profiling and not from the streams themselves, it is a simple ideological retaliation, aimed at protecting not the artists but the principle of capitalist accumulation. Accumulation to which we are called to contribute with our very being as people who make music and people who listen to it, with the emotions it arouses in us: what is commodified and exploited (and conditioned) is not only the “artistic” expression but also the desires and, ultimately, our essence, precisely.
With the awareness that “ethical consumption” cannot exist within the confines of capitalism and that the demonization of platforms is a reflex that prevents us from looking at the true nature of the problem, you will continue to find us on Bandcamp until further notice.
